Follow the Norway to survive winter

I came across a great new word this week! “Friluftsliv”!

It’s a Norwegian word that literally translates as “free air life” – and describes the benefit of spending time outside for physical and mental well-being.

The reason it struck a chord with me was the news that so many parts of the country are facing various degrees of continued lockdown – and friluftsliv – pronounced ‘free-loofts-liv’ – seemed to me to be the perfect solution to enable groups of six (depending on local restrictions) to still meet up safely, get some healthy fresh air and enjoy themselves despite the winter temperatures.

One of the most satisfying aspects of my job is seeing finished projects – and it’s amazing what our customers achieve. I always recommend a good hardwood decking such as Ipe or Yellow Balau which we stock in a range of lengths at Southgate Timber to keep waste to a minimum.  Each has its own special qualities and beautiful timber tones and doesn’t become slippery or degrade like softwood decking.

JJ Carpentry ordered Yellow Balau to produce this garden decking and horizontal fencing designed by ATS Property for a garden in Herne Bay. It is naturally resistant to weathering, insect and fungal infestation and has a lifespan of more than 25 years – perfect for the good old British weather!

To get this level of workmanship and finish, we always recommend you get the professionals in. However,  the more ambitious amongst you will be glad to know that it’s much easier to work with than composite decking  – and is more cost-effective when compared to man-made or stone options. With certain species we can offer matching components such as posts and handrails to create an outside room with character.  As for maintenance, you can leave it unfinished to naturally silver, or maintain and enhance the colour with oils.

One of the things we pride ourselves on at Southgate Timber is that we source our Yellow Balau  from environmentally sustainable and well-managed forests in Indonesia and work closely with trusted suppliers and shippers to ensure the specification is what we believe to be the best in the UK.

We have special October offers of 10% off – and don’t worry about current restrictions as we are now operating a click and collect service, alongside our usual delivery service, which you can select during the online checkout process.

So instead of hibernating under lockdown this winter, get your thermals on, heat up the mulled wine and enjoy being friluftsliv!

Skoll!
