If you’ve been searching for Ipe decking recently, you may have noticed it’s become increasingly difficult to find. Once the go-to premium hardwood for luxury decks, Ipe is now in short supply across the UK. So, what’s happening, and what are your best options?

Why Ipe Is Becoming Scarce

Ipe (also known as Brazilian Walnut) is sourced from South America, primarily Brazil. It’s renowned for its extreme strength, density, and long lifespan, which is exactly why it’s been so sought after for years.

However, obtaining Ipe responsibly is becoming more and more complex. To fell and export Ipe legally, mills must obtain the correct environmental and sustainability certifications, and these are increasingly difficult to secure. As a result, the supply chain has tightened, and fewer certified mills are producing Ipe to meet global demand.

At Southgate Timber, we’re proud to be one of the UK’s largest and most reliable suppliers of Ipe decking, so if anyone has stock, it’s usually us. But even with our direct supply chains, availability can vary throughout the year. That’s why it’s worth knowing about high-quality alternatives that deliver the same premium performance and finish.

Top Alternatives to Ipe Decking

1. Jatoba Decking

If you love Ipe but want something more budget-friendly, Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry) is an excellent choice.

  • Durability: Nearly as hard and dense as Ipe, making it perfect for long-lasting decks.
  • Aesthetics: Offers a beautiful range of hues, from rich reds to golden browns, giving your outdoor space warmth and character.
  • Options: Available in hidden-fix profiles for a clean, screw-free finish.
  • Value: Considerably more affordable than Ipe, offering premium performance at a lower cost.

Jatoba is one of the best like-for-like replacements for Ipe currently available.

2. Thermo-Ash Decking

The newest contender in premium hardwood decking is Thermo-Ash, a heat-treated European timber that delivers performance close to tropical hardwoods.

  • Finish: Pre-oiled with a stunning coffee-brown tone and a seamless end-matched profile for a modern look.
  • Fixing: Supplied with hidden-fix compatibility for a flawless finish.
  • Sustainability: Treated without chemicals using only heat and steam, so less environmental impact.
  • Longevity: While Ipe and Jatoba remain slightly stronger than Thermo-Ash, Thermo-Ash should last around the same time when properly installed and maintained.

Thermo-Ash has become a customer favourite at Southgate Timber thanks to its pre-oiled boards, contemporary appearance, and excellent performance in UK weather conditions.
