Timber cladding and fencing are popular choices for homeowners and builders looking to create durable, aesthetically pleasing exteriors. However, the longevity and appearance of these structures don't just depend on the quality of the wood – choosing the right fixings is equally crucial. Here’s why using the correct fixings is essential for your timber projects.

Preventing Corrosion and Staining

Timber can be susceptible to staining and discolouration if the wrong type of fixings are used. Standard steel or galvanised nails and screws may corrode over time, reacting with the fibres in the wood and leaving unsightly black streaks. To avoid this, opt for stainless steel fixings, which are resistant to corrosion and will not compromise the wood's appearance.

Ensuring Structural Integrity

The fixings you choose must be strong enough to hold the timber securely in place. Incorrect fixings can loosen over time due to wood expansion and contraction caused by changes in weather and temperature. This not only affects the appearance but can also lead to safety hazards. Quality fixings designed for outdoor timber use ensure that your cladding or fencing remains stable and secure.

Accommodating Timber Movement

Wood is a natural material that expands and contracts with moisture levels. Using the right fixings allows for this movement, preventing the wood from splitting or warping. High-quality fixings will allow the timber to move naturally without putting undue stress on the wood, preserving the integrity of the structure.

Enhancing Longevity

By choosing fixings that are specifically designed for timber cladding and fencing, you increase the lifespan of your installation. High-quality fixings are engineered to withstand the environmental challenges that timber structures face, such as UV exposure, rain, and wind. This ensures that your cladding and fencing will look good and perform well for years to come.

Maintaining Aesthetic Appeal

The appearance of your cladding or fencing is just as important as its functionality. Visible fixings can either complement or detract from the overall look. Choosing the right fixings ensures that your project maintains its intended aesthetic appeal, offering a seamless appearance.

Saving Time and Money in the Long Run

Investing in the correct fixings from the outset may seem more expensive, but it can save you time and money over the life of your project. Inferior fixings may lead to repairs, replacements, or even a complete reinstallation if they fail. Using the right fixings reduces the risk of these costly issues, providing peace of mind that your timber cladding or fencing will stand the test of time.

Fixing Recommendations

When working with softwoods with increased stability like Western Red Cedar and Thermo Ayous, stainless steel lost head nails and Paslode stainless steel brads are ideal for optimal installation, but we have found some customers prefer to use Spax stainless steel façade screws. For softwoods prone to a bit more movement like Siberian Larch, we recommend using either the 4.5 x 45mm or 4.5 x 50mm Spax stainless steel façade screws at regular fixing points for a more secure hold of the timber.

When it comes to timber cladding and fencing, the importance of using the right fixings cannot be overstated. From preventing corrosion and ensuring structural integrity to enhancing the overall longevity and appearance of your project, the correct fixings play a vital role in the success of your installation. Don’t overlook this critical component - choose high-quality fixings that are designed to complement and protect your timber for the best results.
