At Southgate Timber, one of the questions we hear most often is: “Which timber cladding is most durable?” Every timber species has its own strengths, whether that’s natural durability, thermal modification, or value for money. To make things clearer, we’ve ranked the cladding we supply in order of durability, so you can find the best fit for your project.

1. Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar is the benchmark for high-performance cladding. Naturally durable and resistant to decay, it also has excellent dimensional stability, meaning it won’t warp or twist easily. With its beautiful reddish tones and proven track record in UK projects, Cedar remains our premium recommendation for long-lasting cladding.

2. Thermo Ayous

Thermo Ayous is a thermally modified hardwood that combines durability, stability and a sleek, knot-free appearance. The heat treatment improves its resistance to moisture and extends its service life, making it one of the most reliable modern choices. Its consistent brown colouring also makes it popular with architects and homeowners looking for a contemporary finish.

3. Black Barn Cladding (Premium Lodgepole Pine)

Manufactured from premium Lodgepole Pine from British Columbia, our Black Barn Cladding is finished with a durable performance coating. While pine is naturally softer than hardwoods, the combination of high-grade timber and protective finish gives this cladding impressive longevity. Its bold, painted aesthetic is perfect for striking, contemporary designs, and bespoke colour matching is also available.

4. Thermowood (Nordic Pine)

Thermowood is Nordic Pine that has been through a thermal modification process to improve its stability and durability. The treatment darkens its appearance and increases its resistance to decay. It doesn’t match the resilience of Cedar or hardwoods, but it’s a cost-effective and reliable option for many cladding projects.

5. Radiata Pine

Our Radiata Pine cladding is thermally modified, which significantly boosts its durability compared to standard pine. It is highly stable, resistant to moisture, and virtually knot-free, providing a clean and uniform finish. Customers also benefit from excellent yield with minimal waste. Radiata Pine is a great choice for those wanting hardwood-like performance at a more accessible price point.

6. Far Eastern Hardwood

Our Far Eastern hardwood is dense and strong, with attractive rich tones, but its generally considered slightly durable. For this reason, we mainly recommend it for internal joinery. When used externally, it must be finished and maintained to protect against moisture and UV exposure. With the right finish, it performs well, but without, it cannot match the natural durability of Cedar or modified timbers.

7. Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir is known for its structural strength, but as a cladding material it has less natural durability than the species listed above. It’s still a beautiful timber, known for its pale-to-reddish tones, offering excellent resistance to weather and wear. A cost-effective alternative to more premium timbers.

8. European Larch

European Larch is a dense softwood that offers good natural strength and attractive golden tones. In terms of durability, it lands at a very similar ranking to Douglas Fir, falling behind just slightly. Over time, it weathers to a silvery grey, adding character to façades. While it is less durable than modified products or premium timbers like Cedar, it performs well and remains a popular budget-friendly option.

Choosing the Right Cladding

Every project has different needs, which is why we offer such a broad range of species. For maximum natural durability, we recommend products like Western Red Cedar. For strong performance, Thermo Ayous, Black Barn Cladding, Thermowood, and Radiata Pine are all excellent options because they’re thermally modified or treated for increased durability. And for more cost-sensitive builds, Far Eastern Hardwood, European Larch and Douglas Fir remain attractive and reliable. Whatever your project, our team can guide you to the perfect choice. Explore our full timber cladding range today and discover which species best fits your design and budget.
