When choosing timber cladding for a project, people often ask us if they need to treat their cladding to make it last. The short answer is: No, treatment does not determine lifespan. Your timber’s durability comes from the species you choose, not whether you apply an oil or coating. However… treatment does have a major impact on appearance, and this is where many people get confused. Let’s break it down clearly so you can choose the right approach for your project.

Does My Cladding Need Treatment for Longevity?

No. High-quality timber cladding is naturally durable and designed to last outdoors for decades without needing treatment. This is why many architects specify no finish at all, the timber ages gracefully and requires minimal upkeep.

So Why Do People Treat Timber Cladding?

Treatment is used for appearance, not durability. Treated timber becomes richer in colour, darker and more enhanced. Applying UV oil or tinted treatment will:

  • Deepen the timber’s natural tones
  • Enrich the grain pattern
  • Maintain the ‘freshly installed’ colour for longer
  • Give the facade a more polished, contemporary finish

This is ideal if you want your cladding to stay brown, golden or honey toned instead of fading, and preserve its original appearance.

On the other hand, untreated timber slowly fades in colour overtime due to weathering. Leaving your cladding untreated allows it to develop a soft, elegant, silvery grey patina. Many designers actually prefer this look for a more rustic and natural look. Benefits of going untreated includes:

  • Zero maintenance
  • Natural, Scandinavian-inspired appearance
  • Uniform tone over time
  • Completely natural weathering process

Does Treatment Stop Cladding from Weathering?

No treatment is permanent. Even if you apply UV oil, the colour will gradually lighten without regular re-application. So, the question becomes less about stopping weathering and more about slowing it. If you want your cladding to stay dark, brown or golden, you’ll need a UV protection oil, and regular maintenance coats (usually every 1 – 2 years).

Which Option Is Best?

It all depends on the look you want! Choose to treat if you want to preserve that warm, rich colour, stronger grain definition, a more polished finish, and a modern or premium aesthetic. Decide not to treat if you want something that’s very low maintenance and don’t mind natural weathering, or if you like the soft, silvery-grey tones for a more rustic, Scandinavian or architectural look. Both approaches last just as long, they simply age differently.

So, Do You Need to Treat Cladding?

No, treatment is optional and purely for visual preference. Your timber will last regardless. The only question is: do you want rich, enhanced colour… or natural, weathered silver?
